The Maharashtra government has once again extended the deadline for the installation of High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on vehicles registered before 2019. The new and final deadline is August 15, 2025, after which strict penal action will be taken against vehicle owners who fail to comply.
This marks the third extension of the deadline, originally set for June 30, 2025, as many vehicle owners have yet to make the switch. The Transport Department has emphasized that no further extensions will be granted beyond this date.
According to official data, out of approximately 2 crore vehicles in Maharashtra that were registered before 2019:
Only 23 lakh vehicles have had HSRP installed.
Around 40 lakh owners have completed online registration.
Over 1 crore vehicles still remain unregistered for HSRP.
Several vehicle owners have reported delays in receiving plates from vendors and closure of some fitment centers, which has affected the overall installation process. In view of these challenges, the state government decided to grant one last extension.
Visit the official Maharashtra Transport Department website.
Book an appointment online for HSRP installation.
Ensure that the HSRP is fitted before August 15 to avoid fines.
Vehicles without HSRP plates will face action from the ‘Vayu Veg’ enforcement team.
However, vehicles that are registered for HSRP before August 15 (even if the plate is not yet installed) will not be penalized.
As per Section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, violators will face a fine of ₹1,000 for non-compliance.
HSRP is a tamper-proof number plate made of aluminum with a unique laser code and non-removable snap lock, designed to:
Prevent vehicle theft
Enhance traceability
Ensure uniformity and security across all states
While HSRP installation is mandatory for all new vehicles since 2019, this regulation now applies to all older vehicles as well.
