A major online fraud has come to light involving the registration of High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) through fake websites. As the Maharashtra government recently extended the deadline for installing HSRP plates on vehicles manufactured before 2019 till August 15, fraudsters have begun exploiting the rush of vehicle owners attempting to comply with the mandate.
According to reports, many citizens are mistakenly registering for HSRP plates through bogus websites instead of the official government portal. Victims of this scam are not only losing money but are also failing to receive the plates for which they paid.
The state government has clarified that this extension is the final deadline, and strict penal action will be taken against vehicles without HSRP plates after the given date. This is the third extension of the deadline, prompting a surge in registrations — particularly among two-wheeler owners trying to avoid penalties.
However, scammers have taken advantage of the situation. Multiple fake websites have emerged, tricking users into paying inflated charges without delivering the plates. These fraudulent portals pose a serious risk to unsuspecting users.
Authorities have strongly advised citizens to exercise caution and ensure that they register only through the official website of the Maharashtra Transport Department: https://transport.maharashtra.gov.in Citizens are encouraged to verify any registration link and, if in doubt, directly contact the Transport Department office for assistance.
