A major news has emerged from Delhi regarding Aadhaar card. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has deactivated Aadhaar numbers of more than 2.5 crore deceased individuals to prevent misuse. According to the written response given by Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Jitin Prasada, this action is part of a nationwide campaign to maintain the purity and accuracy of the Aadhaar database. Aadhaar, the world's largest biometric identification system, currently has 1.34 billion active holders.
This step has been taken to prevent the unauthorized use of the Aadhaar number after death, which will avoid identity fraud or misuse for the benefits of welfare schemes. Aadhaar is only proof of identity and not of citizenship, yet it has become essential for government and private services. Therefore, the government advises holders to ensure its security.
Along with this, UIDAI launched a new 'Aadhaar App' on January 28, 2026, which is completely different from mAadhaar. This app is available on Google Play Store and Apple App Store and does not require visiting an Aadhaar center. It allows adding profiles of five additional family members, enabling management of all from a single mobile number. Changing mobile numbers, email, and name corrections have now become easier from home.
The app includes advanced security features such as QR-based verification, biometric lock, and SIM-binding. This eliminates the need to physically carry the Aadhaar card and prevents unauthorized access by others. The app operates only on the SIM linked to Aadhaar, enhancing security. This new feature will be a great relief for Aadhaar holders and will boost digital services.
