Google's popular video conferencing platform Google Meet faced a nationwide outage in India on Wednesday, affecting thousands of users. The disruption began around 12 noon and users reported a large number of complaints on social media. Many were unable to join meetings or start their own sessions. Several reported that their screens displayed the message “502, This is an error.”
According to the outage monitoring website DownDetector, by 12:08 PM, more than 1,700 complaints had been reported from India. Of these, 67 percent of users said they were facing issues accessing the website, while 32 percent mentioned a server error. This has led to frustration among Google Meet users.
This issue has emerged at a time when incidents of continuous service disruptions in the technology sector have been increasing. Just a week ago, Cloudflare faced major technical difficulties, which caused many websites and online services around the world to go down for some time. The impact of that incident was seen from social media sites to artificial intelligence platforms. Now, following that, with this Google service going down, users have started discussing that “every major tech company is going down this month.”
On the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), users started responding using the hashtag #GoogleMeetDown. Many users tagged @GoogleIndia asking questions like “Is Google Meet down for everyone?” and “When will this service be back online?” Some also made lighthearted jokes about it, saying, “First Cloudflare, then AWS, now GCP too?” Such posts have been trending.
Meanwhile, Google has not yet issued any official explanation. However, it is clear that this major disruption has affected educational institutions, corporate meetings, and online seminars across all sectors. According to experts, the issue may be related to server connections and network infrastructure, and Google is working to restore the service as quickly as possible.
Due to this series of continuous disruptions, the question of users' dependence on digital services and their stability has resurfaced. In the coming times, strengthening cloud and video conferencing infrastructure will be a major challenge for companies.
