Donald Trump has announced a new and aggressive strategy to stop the war in Ukraine. He has decided to continue supplying weapons to Ukraine and warned Russia of economic sanctions if they do not make a peace agreement within 50 days.
In this announcement from the Oval Office, Trump proposed that European countries purchase American-made weapons and send them to Ukraine. This plan aims to reduce America's direct involvement and increase Europe's responsibility. A meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte was also held in this regard.
Trump clearly stated that if Russia does not stop the war within the stipulated time, America will impose up to 100% tariffs. This is called a 'secondary tariff,' meaning economic pressure will also be applied to other countries purchasing Russian oil. Donald Trump has issued a direct warning to Russia. If Vladimir Putin does not agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine within the next 50 days, strict tariffs will be imposed against Russia.
Trump expressed strong dissatisfaction with Putin. He stated, "I often came close to a deal, but Russia procrastinated." Trump, who previously spoke positively about Putin, is now seen criticizing him strongly.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the discussion with Trump was positive. He expressed gratitude for the cooperation from the United States, Germany, and Norway, and clarified that Ukraine will receive other defense materials including the Patriot missile system. European countries including Germany, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway will participate in the supply of weapons. These weapons will include air defense systems, short-range missiles, and artillery like howitzers.
