In Brief
Suppression of media reporting against the government in America
'If you go against, I will directly ban channels'
Trump's open threat to American media
(Donald Trump) President of the United States, Donald Trump, has once again targeted the media. "97 percent of TV networks in America are against me and constantly broadcast negative news," he claimed. He also warned, "If this continues, their licenses might be considered for cancellation."
After Trump's statements, there has been a significant stir in the American media sector. Referring to the 'Federal Communications Commission' (FCC), Trump said, "Networks receive licenses from the government, so why shouldn't action be taken against channels that provide false news?" However, it is clearly stated on the FCC's website that they do not directly license major networks like CBS, NBC, ABC, or Fox.
Against this backdrop, ABC Network decided to abruptly cancel the popular comedian Jimmy Kimmel's show. This controversy arose due to Kimmel's criticism of Trump and his supporters in a program. Welcoming ABC's decision, Trump said, "Kimmel had no talent and his ratings were consistently declining. He should have been removed earlier."
This conflict between American media and the administration has once again raised questions about media freedom. The statements of the President and the roles of the networks suggest that the media-politics conflict in America is likely to intensify in the coming times.
