Colorful preparations for the assembly elections are in full swing in West Bengal. The Election Commission is expected to announce the assembly elections either at the end of this year or in the middle of next year. Therefore, a fierce contest is expected between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP. Meanwhile, according to a survey conducted before the elections, the picture of the power dynamics in West Bengal is becoming clear.
According to a recent survey by C-Voter, if the Lok Sabha elections were held in West Bengal now, the performance of the Trinamool Congress would remain almost stable compared to 2024. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Trinamool Congress won 29 out of 42 seats, which was an increase compared to 2019. The BJP won 12 seats in the same election and became the second largest party in the state.
According to the C-Voter survey, if the Lok Sabha elections were held now, the Trinamool Congress might lose only one seat, meaning 28 seats could be credited to their account. On the other hand, the BJP could gain two seats, bringing their total to 14. An increase in the percentage of BJP voters was recorded in January, rising from 39% to 42%. Based on this survey, it appears that the Trinamool Congress's power at the Lok Sabha level is likely to remain, although it should be noted that voter trends in assembly and Lok Sabha elections may differ.
Meanwhile, another controversial issue has emerged in Maharashtra politics. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has expressed strong anger over the statement made by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding the death of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in the Baramati plane crash. Calling Mamata Banerjee's statement unfortunate and condemnable, Fadnavis said, "Do not politicize Ajitdada's demise. This is not the time for politics, but a time to pay tribute to the departed soul and stand with the grieving family." He also accused Mamata Banerjee of using the death for political gain. This controversy has further strained political relations between Maharashtra and West Bengal.
