Nashik: In the wake of continuous rainfall in the catchment area of Gangapur Dam, the water level of the Godavari River has risen significantly, creating a flood-like situation in several low-lying areas. The water discharge from Gangapur Dam was increased to 6,160 cusecs from 2 PM today, up from the previous 3,944 cusecs recorded till Sunday evening.
This sudden increase in discharge has resulted in water reaching waist height near the Dutondya Maruti Temple, prompting the district administration to issue a flood warning to villages situated along the riverbanks.
For the first time this season, the region has recorded 315 mm of rainfall in June, leading to continuous inflow into the dam. The Godavari River is flowing with full force through the Ramkund area, raising concerns about further flooding if rains continue.
Rainfall in the dam’s catchment area has been recorded as follows:
Trimbakeshwar: 24 mm
Amboli: 32 mm
Gangapur: 5 mm
This has resulted in an inflow of 71 Dalghafu floodwater into the dam.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall over the next three to four days. In view of the rising water levels and potential risk, residents living in low-lying areas and near riverbanks have been advised to remain alert, follow the administration’s instructions, and take necessary safety precautions.
