Enhanced Compensation Rules for Metro Accidents Announced

In a major development for metro commuters, the government has announced updated compensation rules under the Metro Railways (Procedure of Claims) Rules, 2025. According to the new policy, metro passengers who suffer injuries or fatalities in an accident will now be eligible for enhanced compensation of up to ₹8 lakh.

This provision applies to all metro services across India, including major cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Chennai, Noida, Ahmedabad, Pune, Nagpur, and Kochi. As metro ridership continues to grow, so does the need for robust passenger safety and protection. These new rules are seen as a step forward in ensuring greater financial security for commuters.

Key Compensation Provisions Under Metro Accident Rules 2025:

  1. Death of a passenger:
    The family of the deceased will receive ₹8 lakh as compensation. (Earlier: ₹4 lakh as per 2007 rules)

  2. Loss of both hands or one hand and one leg:
    Compensation of ₹8 lakh will be awarded.

  3. Fracture of hip joint:
    A compensation of ₹1.6 lakh will be provided.

  4. Fracture of both legs:
    Eligible for ₹1.6 lakh in compensation.

  5. Spinal fracture:
    Compensation set at ₹2.4 lakh.

  6. Paralysis (Hemiplegia/Ardhanga Vayu):
    Victims will receive ₹4 lakh.

  7. Other serious injuries causing total inability to work:
    In cases where the injury doesn’t fall under the above categories but renders a person incapable of working, compensation of ₹4 lakh will be granted.

This updated framework brings significant relief to metro passengers and their families, offering financial protection in unfortunate situations. With metro services expanding rapidly across Indian cities, these compensation rules aim to ensure a more secure and passenger-friendly transit system.
