Due to the large-scale disruption of flights in December, the country's largest airline, Indigo, has suffered significant financial losses. According to the data presented by the Ministry of Civil Aviation in the Rajya Sabha, Indigo alone spent 226.8 million rupees on passenger compensation and other facilities. This amount was given to passengers facing issues such as flight cancellations, delays, or denied boarding. This caused inconvenience to millions of passengers, and many lost important opportunities.
According to the information provided by the government, in the month of December, all domestic airlines collectively paid more than 24 crore rupees as compensation, with Indigo having the largest share. The situation became more serious at the beginning of December, when more than 2,500 flights were canceled and more than 1,800 flights were delayed between December 3 and 5.
This directly affected more than 300,000 passengers. Considering this difficult situation, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) ordered Indigo to reduce its winter schedule by 10%. Compared to other companies, Indigo's compensation amount was significantly higher; Tata Group's Air India and Air India Express together paid 7.461 million, SpiceJet paid 4.009 million, and Akasa Air paid 2.106 million rupees.
IndiGo has now significantly reduced its international network, resulting in a decrease in the number of flights on major routes such as London, Manchester, and Copenhagen. The main reason behind this decision is the geopolitical crisis worldwide. Due to ongoing wars and tensions in various countries, many nations have restricted their airspace.
As a result, aircraft have to take longer routes, and the block time of IndiGo's Boeing 787-9 aircraft has increased. This not only affects the schedule disruptions but also increases fuel consumption. Therefore, passengers planning to travel to places like London or Manchester for business trips should exercise caution and explore alternative routes.
