Kolhapur Weather: Panchganga level rises; Warning of heavy rains

Pre-monsoon rains have begun to wreak havoc across Kolhapur city and district, significantly affecting normal life. Heavy downpours have been particularly intense in Gaganbawada and Bhudargad talukas, leading to a steady rise in the water level of the Panchganga River. Six dams across the district are currently experiencing increased water inflow.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed the arrival of the southwest monsoon at the Goa border, with its effects already being felt across the region. Forecasts predict continued heavy rainfall in Kolhapur over the coming days. As a precaution, a yellow alert has been issued for Kolhapur city until May 29, while a more severe orange alert has been declared for the Ghat areas. The next 36 hours are considered critical, with the IMD warning of extremely heavy rainfall in the hilly regions.

In addition to Kolhapur, a low-pressure system active over South Konkan and Goa is causing widespread showers. The monsoon officially entered Konkan today and is advancing towards Mumbai. Reports from various parts of Maharashtra indicate crop damage in agricultural areas due to intense rainfall.

The water level of the Rajaram Dam has reached 16 feet 9 inches, raising concern among local authorities and residents. Infrastructural issues have also emerged, with traffic suspended on the Kasba Bawda–Vadang Road due to severe waterlogging. The district administration has installed barricades to ensure public safety. Authorities have expressed concern as the dam has submerged unusually early — in the month of May itself — hinting at the severity of the rainfall.
