The ongoing controversy surrounding the use of loudspeakers for Azaan in Mumbai mosques has taken a political turn, with Samajwadi Party MP Abu Azmi strongly criticizing the state government and voicing support for Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar's inclusive stance.
In a meeting held this morning with a delegation of the nationalist Muslim community, Abu Azmi expressed serious concerns over what he termed as selective restrictions on the Azaan in Maharashtra. "Azaan is called out across the country, so why are such restrictions being imposed only in Maharashtra? Why are these rules seemingly targeted only at the Muslim community?" Azmi questioned.
He further alleged that the issue is being deliberately escalated by certain groups aiming to spread communal tension. "People are standing outside mosques to provoke others, creating unnecessary disturbances at police stations — this is not just law enforcement, it’s a campaign to spread hatred against Muslims," he claimed. Azmi added that he had personally visited multiple police stations in Mumbai to file complaints regarding the growing tension and provocation around the issue.
Importantly, during the same meeting, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar was present and heard the delegation’s concerns. He assured them that he would discuss the matter with the police administration and work towards a balanced and respectful resolution. Azmi praised Pawar’s approach, calling him “promising for the Muslim community within the Mahayuti alliance.”
Leaders of the nationalist Muslim delegation urged for a peaceful resolution and appealed to the government to take a comprehensive and inclusive approach. The meeting ended with hopes that constructive dialogue would prevail over confrontation, ensuring religious harmony in Maharashtra.
