In a significant leap towards integrating technology with public transport safety, an AI-based smart e-bus was unveiled in Pune today. The new buses, equipped with CCTV cameras that monitor driver behavior, have been introduced by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) following the recent Swargate incident. Transport Minister and MSRTC Chairman Pratap Sarnaik stated that this innovation is a vital step towards enhancing women’s safety and ensuring passenger security.
The standout feature of these smart buses is the AI-powered surveillance system. The CCTV cameras will continuously monitor the driver's actions. If the driver is found using a mobile phone or dozing off while driving, an immediate alert will be triggered, including a warning alarm for passengers seated behind. Minister Sarnaik emphasized that although the system has made some drivers uneasy, it is essential for ensuring safe travel.
MSRTC plans to purchase a total of 5,000 buses, out of which at least 1,000 will be electric buses (e-buses). These buses will be inducted into depots in a phased manner. The newly presented AI-enabled e-bus was initially developed for the Uttar Pradesh Transport Corporation but has been adapted for Maharashtra’s specific needs, with a focus on safety enhancements.
The buses will also feature two internal CCTV cameras to monitor passenger behavior and a foam-based fire extinguishing system to tackle any sudden onboard fire emergencies. In light of the Swargate incident, an additional safety measure has been introduced: if someone tries to forcibly open a locked bus, the system will trigger a security alarm.
Minister Sarnaik added, “This policy not only supports the state’s push for electric vehicles but also incorporates the latest technology to ensure safety, particularly for women travelers. We plan to procure at least 1,000 such e-buses annually going forward.”
These AI-enabled buses represent a forward-thinking approach by the Maharashtra government to modernize public transport and prioritize passenger welfare.
