Maharashtra's Agriculture Minister Manikrao Kokate has issued a public apology to farmers following widespread backlash over a controversial statement he made regarding farm loan waivers. The remarks, made two days ago during a visit to areas affected by unseasonal rains, sparked outrage among farmers and political leaders alike.

The Controversial Statement

While assessing crop damage due to unseasonal rains, Minister Kokate questioned the utility of farm loan waivers, asking farmers, “What do you do with that money after getting the loan waiver? Do you invest in agriculture?” The tone and implication of the question triggered immediate criticism, with many accusing him of insensitivity towards the struggles of farmers.

In his full remarks, Kokate said:

“Those who regularly repay loans should continue doing so. Others should take loans and wait five to ten years for a waiver—there’s nothing to pay until then. After a loan waiver, you get the money. But do you use even a single rupee of that for farming? The government gives money to support agriculture. You have funds for pipelines, irrigation, and farm ponds. The government is making capital investments. But are farmers doing the same? They say they need money for crop insurance or other expenses, but then they use it to get engaged or married.”

Wider Impact and Context

The controversy comes at a time when Maharashtra’s agricultural sector is grappling with losses due to unpredictable weather patterns, delayed compensation, and rising input costs. Loan waivers, while often seen as temporary relief, remain a contentious issue in state politics.

Observers suggest that the minister’s remarks reflect a broader disconnect between policymakers and grassroots realities. The incident underscores the need for constructive dialogue and empathetic leadership when dealing with the agricultural crisis.
