CSMT, Kurla, Ghatkopar, Thane, and Dadar are considered the busiest railway stations in Mumbai. Every day, millions of passengers travel through these stations. Considering the increasing number of passengers and the growing pressure on railway traffic, Western Railway has decided to build a new platform at Dadar railway station. This new platform will be constructed adjacent to the existing platform number 7 of Western Railway, thereby creating a significant facility especially for long-distance trains.
Dadar railway station is a very important junction for both Central Railway and Western Railway routes. More than six lakh passengers travel from here daily. Currently, platforms number 1 to 7 are available for Western Railway at Dadar station, while platforms number 8 to 14 are used for Central Railway. Adding a new platform to Western Railway's platform number 7 will make handling long-distance trains easier.
The Western Railway is considering assigning the number '7A' to this new platform. If this platform is given to the Central Railway, the numbers of many platforms at the station will have to be changed. This could affect signboards, public announcement systems, and passenger direction boards. To avoid this inconvenience, the option of assigning the new platform the number 7A is under consideration. However, a final decision has not yet been made, according to railway sources.
Currently, many long-distance trains in the Western Railway's Mumbai Central division either depart from or stop at Dadar station. Due to the limited terminal lines available for long-distance trains, managing these trains will become more challenging in the future once the sixth line is completed. Therefore, it has been decided to construct another platform adjacent to platform number 7.
According to railway officials, this new platform will enable more effective handling of the increasing number of passengers and trains in the future. Passengers will receive better facilities, and the schedule of long-distance trains will be smoother. This step, taken with future needs in mind, will be useful in reducing the strain on Dadar station.
