Tensions flared in Mumbai’s Bhandup area after a Croma showroom allegedly asked an employee to wipe the traditional tilak (mole) from his forehead before entering the premises. The incident triggered a strong reaction from Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers, who stormed the showroom in protest.
According to reports, the employee was allegedly denied entry into the Croma store after he came to work wearing a tilak on his forehead — a practice considered a part of Hindu and Marathi cultural identity. The staff reportedly insisted that he remove the tilak, which sparked outrage among local MNS workers after the incident was brought to their attention.
Soon after learning of the incident, a group of MNS activists entered the Croma showroom in protest. The situation quickly escalated as the activists created a ruckus, demanding an explanation and a formal apology from the store management. Following the protest, the store owner issued an apology to the affected employee. The MNS workers left the premises after the apology was accepted.
The incident comes amid rising concerns over cultural and linguistic discrimination against Marathi-speaking individuals in Mumbai. MNS, known for its strong stance on Marathi identity and rights, has been vocal against such perceived insults to local traditions. Party supporters have warned that they will not tolerate any disrespect towards Marathi culture or religious practices, especially in workplaces and public spaces.
While no official complaint has been filed so far, the incident has gained traction on social media, drawing mixed reactions. Some users have supported the MNS's assertiveness in protecting cultural identity, while others have questioned the method of protest. Authorities are likely to review the matter to ensure workplace policies are inclusive and respectful of cultural practices.
