Due to the increase in crimes against women and minors in Mumbai, the BEST administration has expedited the process of installing CCTV in all buses following the directives of the Mumbai Police. More than 400 cameras will be installed in 249 buses owned by BEST, and the tender process has been initiated. According to senior officials, all buses in the BEST fleet will be under CCTV by February.

Key Points:

Women's Safety: There has been an increase in incidents of harassment, pickpocketing, and other crimes against women during train and bus travel in Mumbai. In this context, important steps are being taken in BEST following the directives of the Police Commissioner.

New System: Two 'third eyes' will be installed in each bus:

Front Side: Near the steps by the driver, to monitor passengers boarding and alighting.

Rear Side: At the back of the bus, to clearly see movements throughout the bus.

Reverse Camera: An additional camera at the back of the bus to clearly show the driver the rear view to prevent accidents.

Maintenance of Private Buses

Private contractor buses already have CCTV cameras, but their functionality and footage quality are being checked. Contractors have been instructed to install new cameras in buses with faulty cameras, so that effective monitoring for the safety of women and passengers is ensured in all buses.

This decision to install CCTV is an important step for the safety of women and to identify criminals. It is likely to reduce harassment, theft, and other crimes. This system will enhance security and trust for public transport passengers in Mumbai.
