Comedian Kapil Sharma on MNS Radar
Bollywood Still Refers to Mumbai as Bombay
Show Respect, Call it Mumbai... MNS Warning to Kapil Sharma
MNS On Kapil Sharma : In Maharashtra, adorned with the forts of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and symbolizing strength, the name 'Mumbai' holds a special significance. This name is not just of a city, but a symbol of identity for countless Marathi people. In 1995, the state government and in 1996, the central government officially renamed 'Bombay' to 'Mumbai', giving due respect to the city's self-esteem. However, even after thirty years, seeing that this name is not respected, Ameya Khopkar, the head of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena's (MNS) film wing, has become aggressive.
In the popular program 'The Great Indian Kapil Show' on Netflix, the word 'Bombay' is continuously used, prompting Khopkar to directly warn comedian Kapil Sharma and his team. "Stop referring to it as Bombay instead of Mumbai, otherwise we will directly protest on the set and halt the shooting," he has stated in clear terms.
Amey Khopkar shared a clip from Kapil's show on X (formerly Twitter) to highlight this issue. "It's been three decades since Bombay was renamed Mumbai, yet the Hindi film industry and web series still use Bombay. Names like Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata are correctly used, so why undermine Mumbai? Mumbai is the identity of Maharashtra, so its name must be respected," said Khopkar.
Speaking to the media, he angrily questioned – "Kapil has been living in Mumbai for the past 15-17 years, yet he still can't pronounce the city's name correctly? Would it be acceptable to call him Tapil instead of Kapil?" Additionally, he warned, "We are not against Kapil Sharma or Bollywood, but any compromise with Mumbai's name will not be tolerated."
Now, everyone is keen to see how Kapil Sharma or his team responds to this warning. Because, it's not just a pronunciation in a comedy show, but a matter of Mumbai's honor. A name is a symbol of identity, and preserving the pride of 'Mumbai' is the responsibility of everyone living here.
