After the incident that shook the state's politics, rapid developments are now being seen in the power dynamics. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar unfortunately passed away in a plane crash on January 28, 2026. While traveling from Mumbai to Baramati, his plane met with a major accident in the Baramati area. This incident has spread mourning across Maharashtra and created a significant void in the political circle.

After Ajit Pawar's demise, there was a surge of discussions about who would take responsibility in his place. Meanwhile, there was a demand from many MLAs and party workers of the Nationalist Congress Party to appoint Sunetra Pawar, wife of Ajit Pawar, as the Deputy Chief Minister. Against this backdrop, yesterday, NCP state president Sunil Tatkare and senior leader Chhagan Bhujbal met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Information has emerged that detailed discussions about the Deputy Chief Minister position took place during this meeting.

It has become clear today that Sunetra Pawar will take the oath as Deputy Chief Minister. However, Sharad Pawar has stated that he has no information about this oath-taking ceremony. He also indicated that Sunetra Pawar made this decision without any discussion with the Pawar family. This has once again brought internal differences within the Nationalist Congress Party to the forefront. Sharad Pawar had previously expressed the possibility of merging both Nationalist Congress Party factions, but the current developments have raised questions about those discussions.

Meanwhile, against this entire backdrop, Chhagan Bhujbal has made a significant statement. Bhujbal said, “The decision has been made considering the opinions of ordinary workers and MLAs. Making Sunetra Tai the Deputy Chief Minister will be very appropriate, and we have started the process in that direction. The decision will be implemented this afternoon after completing the official process with the consent of the MLAs and the party.”

Stating that discussions have taken place with the Chief Minister, Bhujbal also clarified that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is providing full cooperation. “Perhaps the proposal will be sent to the Governor today itself and the oath-taking ceremony will be completed,” he indicated. When asked about Sharad Pawar's role, Bhujbal avoided speaking on the subject. “Currently, the most important position held by the Nationalist Congress Party is the Deputy Chief Minister's post. Therefore, it is necessary to hand over the reins properly to Sunetra Tai. She will make the next decision herself,” said Bhujbal.
