After being caught in a swirl of controversy, the much-discussed biographical film Phule, directed by Anant Mahadevan and starring Pratik Gandhi and Patralekha, is finally set to release on April 25. The film, which was initially scheduled to hit theatres on April 11, had faced uncertainty due to objections raised over its content.

However, the Censor Board has now granted the film a 'U' certificate, paving the way for its nationwide release. Speaking about the development, director Anant Mahadevan remarked:

“Even the Censor Board believes this film should be viewed by young children. It’s an educational and balanced portrayal—not one-sided as some have claimed.”

What Sparked the Controversy?

The controversy began when Anand Dave, President of the Brahmin Federation, raised objections to certain scenes in Phule, alleging that the film could promote casteism. He stated that the film should be inclusive and not portray a one-sided narrative.

In response to the criticism, director Anant Mahadevan and the film's production team met with former Minister of State Chhagan Bhujbal to clarify the film’s intent and content. Following this, Sachin Kharat, a leader of the Republican Party, strongly condemned Anand Dave's remarks, escalating the political discourse around the film.

Director's Clarification

Amid rising tensions, Mahadevan defended the film’s narrative approach:

“You cannot judge a film solely based on its trailer. The movie treats both social perspectives with balance and equality. Our goal was to present a comprehensive view of Jyotiba and Savitribai Phule’s contribution to society, not to target any community.”

The director emphasized that the film seeks to educate and inspire, especially younger audiences, about social reform, equality, and the legacy of the Phule couple.

About the Film

Phule is a biographical drama based on the life and legacy of Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule, pioneers of social reform and education in India. The film aims to portray their relentless efforts to eradicate caste-based discrimination and promote women's education in 19th-century India.

New Release Date: April 25

With the U certificate now in hand, Phule is all set to release on April 25, bringing an end to the speculation surrounding its theatrical debut. The makers are optimistic that the film will not only resonate with audiences but also spark important social conversations.
