There are signs that the ongoing discussions regarding the establishment of power and committee allocation in the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) are finally coming to an end. According to reliable sources, the allocation of important committees in the grand alliance is almost finalized, with the chairmanship of the standing committee going to the BJP, while the chairmanship of the improvement committee will go to the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction). Additionally, it is informed that the allocation of other major committees has also been decided by mutual agreement.
The Mumbai Municipal Corporation is considered the richest and most important local self-government body in the country. Therefore, the entire state's attention is focused on who will have power here and which party will get which committee. For the past few weeks, there have been in-depth discussions between the BJP and Shiv Sena regarding committee allocation. It is understood that this formula has been finalized after a high-level meeting.
The Standing Committee is considered the most powerful committee in the municipal corporation. This committee has the authority to make financial decisions, approve proposals worth crores of rupees, plan development works, and finalize expenditures. Therefore, the BJP leadership was firm on giving this committee to the BJP. According to sources, the BJP claimed the Standing Committee to maintain financial discipline, transparent governance, and control over major projects, which has finally been accepted.
On the other hand, there is an agreement to give the Reform Committee to Shiv Sena. The Reform Committee handles issues directly related to the city's tax structure, property tax, water charges, reform proposals, and citizens. It is said that Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) is in a position to strengthen direct public relations through this medium. Since decisions connecting with ordinary Mumbaikars are made through the Reform Committee, this committee is considered politically important for Shiv Sena.
In addition, it is known that the allocation of the Education Committee, Public Health Committee, Garden Committee, and Women and Child Welfare Committee will also be balanced among the alliance parties. Some committees will be given to BJP, while some will be given to Shiv Sena and allied parties. This is an attempt to convey that no single party will dominate the administration in the municipality.
According to political experts, this committee allocation is not only administrative but also extremely important in view of the upcoming municipal elections. Through the standing committee, the BJP will strengthen its administrative grip by making major decisions, while through the reform committee, Shiv Sena will establish its presence among the people, a strategy has been devised. Meanwhile, an official announcement on this committee allocation will be made soon, sources said. Overall, this formula of alliance in the municipality is considered politically beneficial for both parties.
