When did the number of beneficiaries decrease and when did it increase?
In the state, the Mahayuti Government, which came to power by implementing the beloved sister scheme, is repeatedly questioned by the opposition. Not only that, but there were also complaints a few days ago that funds from other departments were being diverted for the amount given to beloved sisters. Now, this scheme, which has become popular, is starting to become troublesome for the Fadnavis government (Devendra Fadnavis), and the statistics of the financial strain on the treasury for beloved sisters over the year have come to light through the Right to Information.
How many crores did the Fadnavis government spend for beloved sisters?
According to data revealed in a Right to Information request, the state government has spent 43 thousand crores in a year. The Ladaki Bahin Yojana was launched before the Maharashtra Assembly elections. During the elections, this scheme also greatly benefited the government. At that time, the government had allocated a fund of 36 thousand crores to run this scheme. However, now, after a year, it has been revealed that the expenditure on the scheme is more than the allocated fund.
Jitendra Ghadge had filed an RTI application for information. According to it, more than 43,045 crore has been spent on the Ladki Bahin scheme in one year. Although some savings have been made due to the reduced number of beneficiaries, this expenditure is much higher than the 36,000 crore fund reserved for the future.
Increased strain on the government treasury
Under the Ladki Bahin scheme, 43,045.06 crore rupees have been distributed from July 2024 to June 2025. The government has allocated a fund of 36,000 crore for this scheme for the financial year 2026-26. The average monthly expenditure in the first year was 3,587 crore. Therefore, if the number of beneficiaries does not decrease further according to the criteria, this is likely to increase the strain on the government treasury.
When did the number of beneficiaries decrease and when did it increase?
According to the Right to Information, since the scheme started, a distribution of 43,045.06 crore rupees has been made. The number of beneficiaries increased when applications were filed from July, and by April 2025, the highest number of beneficiaries were 2,47,99,797 (2.47 crore) women. However, by June 2025, the number of beneficiaries and the amount distributed decreased by about nine percent. Approximately 77,980 women were excluded based on criteria, saving the state about 340.42 crore rupees.
Challenge that can stand before the government
The government has allocated a fund of 36,000 crore for the Ladli Bahin scheme for the financial year 2025-26. However, the average monthly expenditure in the first year was 3,587 crore. Therefore, if the number of beneficiaries of the Ladli Bahin scheme does not decrease further according to the criteria, there is a fear that the government will face additional pressure in distributing the scheme's funds, posing a significant challenge.
