Rajeev Rai Challenges Raj Thackeray: Can You Oust Bollywood from Mumbai?

The ongoing Marathi versus Hindi language debate in Maharashtra has taken a fiery political turn, with Samajwadi Party MP Rajeev Rai launching a direct challenge at Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray. The remark comes just days after another MP, Rajesh Ranjan (alias Pappu Yadav), made similar critical comments.

Rajeev Rai, in a post on social media platform X, targeted Raj Thackeray over his strong stance that Marathi should be spoken in Maharashtra. Rai accused Thackeray of “bullying poor Hindi-speaking people” and questioned his political strength.

This challenge comes in the backdrop of a grand rally organized on July 5 in Mumbai’s Worli by Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray, who came together after 18 years to assert the cultural and linguistic identity of Maharashtra. The rally saw thousands of Marathi activists gather in a display of unity and regional pride.

However, this renewed assertion of Marathi identity has stirred strong reactions from leaders across the political spectrum. Rajeev Rai, echoing earlier remarks made by Pappu Yadav, took aim at Raj Thackeray, stating:

“If you truly have courage, throw Bollywood — which thrives on Hindi — out of Mumbai. Why don’t you criticize the same industry that made your family rich?”

Rai’s remarks highlight the growing tension around language-based politics in Maharashtra. He warned against targeting Hindi speakers, many of whom migrate to Maharashtra for livelihood, and emphasized the inclusive spirit of the country.

His statement has sparked fresh political debate, with questions being raised about linguistic harmony and the ethics of regional politics.

What has Rajiv Rai written in the ex post?

Dear Raj Thackeray!

Have you ever asked why you have not yet built a political power in Maharashtra? When no one asks, it is a sign of your cowardice to bully poor Hindi speaking people to get media attention. Why don't you ever speak out against the Hindi films that have earned your family billions, the Hindi films that have made Bollywood famous? If you have the guts, drive the Hindi film industry out of Mumbai! If poor Hindi speaking people go to Maharashtra for their livelihood, then thousands of Marathi families also depend on Hindi films for their livelihood.

Marathi language is a language of values, not of bullying. No part of this country can be owned by anyone just because of language; every citizen of this country has a right to every part of it, just as every Marathi person in the entire country has respect and rights. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is not just your hero but the hero of the entire country. Remember, the identity of this country lies in the spirit of "Guests are God", not in cheap bullying, and bullying can be faced... faced properly! So, please do some introspection 🙏 @RajThackeray
