In a significant move ahead of Ashadhi Ekadashi, the Maharashtra government has issued a new circular announcing the "Vitthal Rakhumai Warkari Yojana 2025", aimed at ensuring the safety and welfare of Warkaris (devotees) participating in the centuries-old Pandharpur Wari. The scheme provides financial assistance to Warkaris who are injured or die during the Wari pilgrimage.

The Wari, a revered pilgrimage that has been ongoing for over 800 years, witnesses lakhs of devotees walking hundreds of kilometers to seek the blessings of Lord Vitthal in Pandharpur. This year, the initiative is seen as a compassionate step by the government to support the spiritual journey of the Warkaris.

According to the circular, Warkaris who suffer fatal accidents or pass away during the Wari period (June 16 to July 10, 2025) will receive financial assistance of ₹4 lakh from the state government. In cases of disability exceeding 60 percent, the injured devotee will receive ₹2.5 lakh, while those with less than 60 percent disability will be given ₹74,000.

To oversee the implementation of this and other welfare schemes, the government has also established the Chief Minister Warkari Mahamandal, headquartered in Pandharpur. This dedicated body will ensure the provision of essential services such as food, security, medical aid, insurance coverage, and land acquisition along the palkhi (palanquin) routes. In a further boost to the Warkari community, the government has announced that 1,909 Dindis (groups of devotees) will receive a grant of ₹20,000 each, totaling ₹2.21 crore, to be disbursed through the Social Justice Department.

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, several supportive initiatives are also being rolled out, including:

  • "Charanseva" Initiative – for foot care and support

  • "Arogyachi Wari, Pandharichi Dari" Campaign – promoting health awareness

  • Medical Camps – under the "Majhi Wari, Majhi Sankalp" mission

Additionally, modern infrastructure has been developed in Pandharpur city, including large waterproof pavilions, clean bathrooms, and toilets to ensure a safe and comfortable stay for the pilgrims during the Ashadhi Ekadashi festivities. This comprehensive support package reflects the state government’s commitment to safeguarding the cultural and spiritual essence of the Wari tradition while prioritizing the well-being of the devotees.
