The modern passenger jetty and terminal being constructed in the Gateway of India area of Mumbai is now in its final stage. This ambitious project of the state government is likely to start after the monsoon, that is, in the month of August. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has instructed to complete the work quickly.
This jetty, which is to be constructed at a cost of approximately 22.9 billion rupees, faced opposition from local citizens and environmentalists from the beginning. However, the Mumbai High Court and the Supreme Court have granted permission for this project.
The main objective of this project is to reduce traffic congestion in the Colaba area, increase tourism, and make travel safer, as there is a large number of passengers traveling to Alibaug and surrounding areas. Every year, millions of passengers currently use the old jetties, hence the need for modern facilities.
Although there were concerns that this project would affect the historic Gateway of India and pose a maritime security issue, the court has dismissed these objections. Originally scheduled to start in May, this jetty will now be delayed due to the monsoon and is expected to be operational for passengers from August, according to the concerned officials.
