Mumbai: Apart from passenger tickets, the railway generates revenue through various means. Demonstrating this, Central Railway has earned a substantial income of Rs 404.72 crore from scrap sales in the financial year 2025-26. In the previous financial year 2024-25, earnings from scrap sales amounted to Rs 393.65 crore. Compared to that, this year Central Railway has achieved economic progress by earning 2.81% more revenue.
According to information provided by the railway administration, this increase is the result of the success of the 'Zero Scrap' campaign. The aim of this campaign is to efficiently dispose of unused, old, and waste items and convert them into revenue-generating assets. This campaign was conducted by coordinating efficient use of resources and an environmentally friendly approach.
During this period, various types of materials were sold. This included 40,177 metric tons of permanent scrap, 25,790 metric tons of ferrous scrap, and 3,325 metric tons of non-ferrous scrap. Additionally, 255,218 sleepers were sold. In rolling stock, 47 locomotives, 70 coaches, and 110 wagons were disposed of. Officials stated that the timely and transparent sale of these materials greatly helped in increasing revenue.
The stores department launched a special campaign for identifying and cleaning scrap. Materials lying in remote and scattered locations were found and recorded. Special focus was given to Kurla Cutting Yard, Traction Machine Workshop in Nashik, Parel Workshop, and Manmad Workshop. All five divisions of the railway actively participated in these initiatives.
In this, the Bhusawal division secured the top position by recording scrap sales of 97.02 crore rupees. According to departmental officials, this remarkable achievement was possible due to financial discipline, efficient planning, and strict implementation.
The railway administration noted that scrap sales are not just a revenue-enhancing process but an important step towards environmental sustainability. Reducing the stock of unused items leads to proper utilization of space and prevents wastage. Additionally, this process makes the management of railway assets more efficient.
Officials have clarified that efforts will continue in the future to achieve the 'zero scrap' target and make resource management more efficient. Along with revenue growth, Central Railway is moving towards enhancing its performance by prioritizing cleanliness, transparency, and efficiency.
This increasing performance in scrap sales is contributing to the financial strengthening of the railway and this revenue will also be useful for future infrastructure development. Therefore, the administration has expressed its determination to use the various sources of railway income more effectively.
