Bringing much-needed relief to the traffic-weary citizens of South Mumbai, the newly constructed 'Sindoor Bridge', formerly known as Carnac Bridge, was officially inaugurated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday. The bridge will be open for public use from 3 PM today.

A Bridge with a New Identity and Renewed Purpose

The Sindoor Bridge, which connects the eastern and western corridors of South Mumbai near Masjid Bandar railway station, has been named in place of the old Carnac Bridge—a colonial-era structure that was demolished in August 2022 due to safety concerns. The new flyover connects P.D. Mello Road to key commercial zones such as Crawford Market, Kalbadevi, and Mohammad Ali Road, and is expected to significantly ease congestion in the area.

CM Fadnavis Commends Swift Completion

While addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis remarked,

“The bridge that stood here before was named after a tyrannical British governor. As part of 'Operation Sindoor,' it was decided to rename the structure to reflect patriotic pride. The BMC deserves appreciation for completing the construction in record time.”

Bridge Construction: Fast-Tracked and Efficient

Under the leadership of BMC Additional Commissioner Abhijit Bangar, the project was executed with remarkable speed and efficiency.
Key features include:

  • Total Length: 328 meters

  • Rail Section: 70 meters

  • Approach Road: 230 meters

  • Steel Girders: Two massive girders, each weighing 550 metric tons, were used.

The southern girder was installed on October 19, 2024, while the northern girder was positioned between January 26–30, 2025, during scheduled railway blocks.

Dignitaries Present

The inauguration ceremony was also attended by Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Adv. Rahul Narwekar and Housing Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha. With the bridge now operational, Mumbai’s urban transport system is expected to see smoother, safer, and more efficient movement, especially in South Mumbai.
