Skygazers and astronomy enthusiasts are in for a celestial treat tonight as the rare and radiant Strawberry Moon makes its appearance. The full moon of Jyeshtha Purnima (Full Moon of June) will take on a pinkish hue, offering a breathtaking sight in the night sky from 7 PM onwards.

A Rare Astronomical Event

This phenomenon, popularly known as the Strawberry Moon, occurs only once every 18.6 years. The last time such a moon was observed was in 2005, and the next occurrence is not expected until 2043. Its soft pinkish glow and low position near the horizon make it a unique sight, sparking fascination among stargazers worldwide. The name "Strawberry Moon" does not refer to the actual color of the moon but derives from the strawberry harvesting season in North America. Native American tribes historically named the full moon of June after this seasonal event.

Why Does the Moon Look Pink Tonight?

While the moon won’t turn a bright pink, it will exhibit a warm, golden-pink hue due to its position close to the horizon and its distance from the Earth. At this time, the moon is at its apogee, or the farthest point in its orbit from Earth, making it a "micro moon"—slightly smaller and dimmer than usual. This visual effect, combined with atmospheric conditions during moonrise, contributes to its soft pink or amber tint, creating an illusion of a larger and more colorful moon.

Best Viewing Time and Tips

The Strawberry Moon will be clearly visible from 7 PM onward, with optimal visibility just after moonrise. The event can be viewed without any special equipment, though binoculars or telescopes may enhance the experience. This is a rare opportunity to witness a captivating celestial event that won't return for nearly two decades. Stargazers are encouraged to find a clear, unobstructed view of the eastern horizon to fully enjoy this spectacular moonrise.
