In the wake of the recent Kundamaal bridge collapse in Maval, growing concerns are being raised in Pandharpur over the safety of aging infrastructure, particularly the 150-year-old stone bridge that sees heavy footfall during the Ashadhi Yatra. Local residents and Warkari organizations have urged the administration to close the bridge to traffic and carry out immediate structural inspection and necessary repairs.
Every year, lakhs of Warkaris arrive in Pandharpur for the Ashadhi, Kartiki, and Chaitra Wari pilgrimages, and the historic stone bridge serves as a crucial passage point. With the upcoming Ashadhi Wari drawing near, the condition of this bridge has become a matter of serious concern.
Local citizens and religious groups have demanded that barricades be erected on the sides of the bridge and that thorough structural audits be conducted without delay to ensure the safety of pilgrims.
In addition to the bridge, Pandharpur has 127 old structures, including maths (monasteries) and religious buildings. Residents are calling for these buildings to also undergo safety inspections, and for immediate action to be taken against those found to be in a dangerous condition.
“This holy town, which is a symbol of deep faith for the Warkari community, must be safeguarded against preventable tragedies,” said local citizens, urging the administration to act swiftly and responsibly. The people of Pandharpur have expressed hope that their concerns will be taken seriously to ensure the safety of all devotees.
