In a move aimed at modernizing public transport and enhancing passenger safety, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has announced the launch of 'Smart Buses' equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Transport Minister and MSRTC Chairman Pratap Sarnaik shared the details of this upcoming initiative, which is set to transform the way Maharashtra travels.
The new buses, branded as ‘Lalpari Smart Buses’, will be powered by artificial intelligence (AI) systems and equipped with a host of advanced features. Each bus will include GPS tracking, CCTV cameras, Wi-Fi connectivity, LED TVs, a breath analyzer for drivers, and a bus-locking system to prevent theft or unauthorized access. These features aim to ensure a safe, timely, and well-equipped travel experience for passengers.
The announcement comes in the wake of a recent incident at Pune’s Swargate bus stand, which prompted authorities to prioritize passenger safety. To that end, CCTV cameras will not only record activity inside the bus but will also monitor driver behavior in real-time, helping to prevent accidents and ensure adherence to road safety norms.
A dedicated system will also be implemented to ensure that buses parked at depots or terminals remain secure. LED televisions inside each bus will broadcast government messages, public awareness campaigns, and commercial advertisements. Meanwhile, external LED panels will display ads to generate additional revenue for the corporation.
In light of recent fire incidents in ST buses due to soaring summer temperatures, the smart buses will be fitted with a foam-based fire extinguishing system. This automatic system will activate in case of fire, minimizing damage and enhancing passenger safety.
According to Minister Sarnaik, the rollout of this next-generation smart bus service is expected soon and will mark a major leap in MSRTC’s efforts to make intercity and intrastate travel safer, smarter, and more comfortable for the public.
