The state of Maharashtra is witnessing a troubling rise in illegal liquor trade, with the Excise Department seizing counterfeit alcohol worth a staggering ₹56.48 crore during a special 100-day operation. The crackdown, conducted between January 1 and April 15, has exposed the alarming growth of unauthorized liquor sales and production.

According to a recent report from the state government, there has been a 37.49% increase in illegal liquor-related crimes compared to the same period last year. The report, which reviews the Excise Department’s performance during the 100-day campaign, indicates that 21,118 cases were registered, highlighting the scale of the challenge.

In addition to the spike in crime, the report also reveals that 730 professional criminals were found to be actively involved in the illegal alcohol business. The authorities have linked this surge to a broader increase in liquor outlets, as the state has seen a 37–49% rise in the number of liquor shops.

The Excise Department's aggressive action reflects its commitment to curbing the growing black market for alcohol, which poses serious public health and safety risks. Officials believe that continued vigilance and stricter enforcement are necessary to stem the tide of counterfeit liquor flooding the market.

The report’s findings have sparked concern over the ease with which fake alcohol is being produced and distributed across the state, with many calling for more stringent regulations, better surveillance, and increased public awareness to combat the menace.

Authorities are expected to continue their crackdown and expand investigations to trace the supply networks and manufacturers behind the fake liquor operations.
