World No Tobacco Day is observed annually on May 31 to highlight the harmful effects of tobacco use and to advocate for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption. Like every year, this global health awareness day will be marked across the world, and in 2025, it falls on a Saturday.
The theme announced by the World Health Organization (WHO) for this year is:
“Breaking the Myth: Exposing the Industry’s Tactics for Promoting Tobacco and Nicotine Products.”
This theme aims to raise awareness about the deceptive strategies used by the tobacco and nicotine industries to attract new users, especially among the youth.
The WHO launched the global movement against tobacco in 1987, and since 1988, May 31 has been officially observed as World No Tobacco Day. In a significant move in 1998, WHO initiated the Tobacco-Free Initiative (TFI) to strengthen global anti-tobacco policies. Later, in 2008, it called for a comprehensive ban on all forms of tobacco advertising, promotion, and sponsorship, with a particular focus on protecting young people from being lured into tobacco use.
This year’s observance draws attention to how tobacco and nicotine companies continue to evolve their marketing tactics—using flavored products, eye-catching packaging, and chemical modifications to make their offerings more appealing. These strategies pose a significant threat to public health, particularly among adolescents and young adults.
On this occasion, WHO and public health advocates are urging schools, colleges, healthcare institutions, social organizations, and local administrations to actively participate in anti-tobacco campaigns. Collective efforts are essential to counter industry influence and work towards a tobacco-free future.
