The deadline for filing nominations for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Chandrapur Municipal Corporation ended on Thursday, and against this backdrop, the power struggle in the city's politics has intensified. It is claimed that the high command in Delhi has finally resolved the internal dispute within the Congress. According to this resolution, the mayoral term will be two and a half years each, with the first two and a half years going to MP Pratibha Dhanorkar's group and the remaining two and a half years to MLA Vijay Wadettiwar's group. According to this formula, the group leadership will remain with Vijay Wadettiwar's group. It is reported that Rajesh Adur's name has been recommended by Wadettiwar. This attempt at power balance within the Congress is said to be aimed at reducing local discontent. Meanwhile, since the chairmanship of the standing committee will remain with the Shiv Sena (Thackeray group), coordination within the Maha Vikas Aghadi will be crucial.
However, it appears that the disputes within the Congress have not yet been completely resolved. The councilors of the Vadettiwar group have filed a petition in the Nagpur bench against the orders of the Divisional Commissioner. The Commissioner had instructed to fulfill certain deficiencies regarding group registration. Challenging these instructions, this petition has been filed, and the hearing of this case is scheduled for February 19. Therefore, before the mayoral election, all eyes are on the judicial developments.
Meanwhile, the BJP has also started strong preparations for the mayor and deputy mayor elections to be held on February 10. While the Congress is making moves to form the government, the BJP has tried to change the political equations by announcing its candidates. Sangeeta Khandekar has been nominated for the mayor's post and Sanjay Kancherlawar for the deputy mayor's post by the BJP. BJP state president Ravindra Chavan has issued an official letter in this regard. The BJP's nominations also seem to attempt to balance internal power. It is discussed that a supporter of Kishore Jorgewar has been given a chance for the deputy mayor's post, while a supporter of Sudhir Mungantiwar has been given a chance for the mayor's post. This is believed to be an attempt by the party leadership to maintain coordination among various groups within the BJP.
Against this backdrop, MLA Sudhir Mungantiwar has made an important statement. “Our friends in Congress are trying to ensure the development of Chandrapur city and to get the mayoral post for BJP. Our calculations are working out and our mayor will be elected,” he claimed. He also made an indicative statement, “We have not had direct discussions with anyone, but the other side is in talks with us. It will be clear on February 11 with whom exactly the discussions took place.” On one hand, Congress's two-and-a-half-year formula, and on the other, BJP's aggressive strategies — all these developments have heightened the curiosity about who will hold power in the Chandrapur Municipal Corporation.
