In a bold step toward environmental sustainability, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced that 10 crore trees will be planted across Maharashtra this year as part of the “Green Maharashtra, Prosperous Maharashtra” campaign. A similar target has been set for the following year, with the aim of turning this initiative into a people’s movement.

The announcement was made during a high-level meeting held at the Sahyadri Guest House. The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Forest Minister Ganesh Naik, Minister of State Ashish Jaiswal, Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik, and other senior officials.

Highlighting the state’s achievements in previous campaigns, CM Fadnavis noted that Maharashtra had already successfully planted 33 crore and 50 crore trees in recent years. “This year, we are determined to achieve the target of 10 crore trees, and we will replicate this next year as well,” he said.

He emphasized that tree plantation is vital for maintaining ecological balance and called for the active participation of local bodies, Zilla Parishads, and civil society organizations to ensure the campaign’s success.

The Chief Minister urged the use of artificial intelligence, remote sensing, and satellite technology to track and conserve plantations. He stressed the importance of planting quality saplings aged between 1.5 to 3 years and ensuring proper aftercare.

He further noted that tree species should be selected according to regional climatic conditions and directed the effective use of CAMPA (Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority) funds for plantation activities. Both government and private nurseries must play a key role by supplying quality saplings, he added.

To further the reach of the campaign, CM Fadnavis announced special plantation drives in regions with low green cover, such as Beed and Latur. A massive one crore trees will be planted in the Gadchiroli district, aligning with its ongoing industrial development.

Additionally, large-scale afforestation is planned for the Jyotiba hills, and plantation work along highways will be undertaken by the Forest Department.
