The monsoon has officially arrived in Mumbai, bringing with it heavy rain, thunder, and lightning. While the early arrival — 12 to 15 days ahead of schedule — has created a sense of joy among citizens, authorities have issued a warning due to the risk of high tide and severe weather conditions. Mumbai and its suburbs have been experiencing continuous rainfall since early Monday morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall accompanied by gale-force winds in the next four to five hours. A red alert has been issued for Mumbai and neighboring Raigad district, with predictions of continued intense showers in Mumbai and across western Maharashtra.
According to the IMD, a low-pressure area formed over the Arabian Sea has created favorable conditions for the monsoon and the current downpour. A high tide is expected between 12:00 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. today, with sea waves reaching heights of up to 4.75 meters. Wind speeds are expected to range between 50 to 60 km/h, prompting authorities to issue warnings to fishermen and coastal residents. The sea is expected to remain rough along the Konkan coast, including Alibaug, for the next 18 days. Residents have been urged to exercise extreme caution during this period.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has appealed to citizens to remain indoors unless travel is absolutely necessary, especially during the high tide. Officials warned that if heavy rain coincides with the high tide, there is a strong possibility of disruption to Mumbai’s transport and drainage systems. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have advised the public to stay updated through official alerts and advisories.
