Relief is soon to come for the crowded local travel in Mumbai. After a month's wait, one new AC local train each will start running on the Western Railway and Central Railway. This new underslung Medha air-conditioned train has departed from the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai and is currently stationed at the Villivakkam yard in Chennai. It will soon arrive in Mumbai and be ready to serve, according to Western Railway officials.
The local train in Mumbai is like the lifeline of the city, but due to the crowd, the journey of passengers has become troublesome. To address this, AC local trains were introduced. However, the current AC locals are also extremely crowded. Without additional trips, it is difficult to control the crowd, and breakdowns and regular maintenance management have also become challenging. Even after the new train arrives, it will not be operated immediately. It will be included in the schedule only after a few days of testing and preparation.
The specialty of this new AC local is its underslung design. In this, major equipment along with the electrical system is installed under the floor instead of inside the coach. As a result, the space inside the coach remains open and seating capacity increases. While the capacity of a regular train is 1,028, this train will comfortably carry 1,116 passengers. This will provide passengers with a more comfortable journey and help reduce crowding.
This is good news for Mumbaikars. Millions of passengers depend on locals every day. With the start of additional AC services, especially during holidays and peak hours, crowd control will be achieved. The railway administration has made swift moves in this regard and Mumbaikars will benefit soon. Together on the Western and Central Railways, this train will bring a new dimension to the city's transportation.
