Justice Bhushan Gavai, a native of Amravati in Maharashtra, will take oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of India on Tuesday, May 14. He succeeds the outgoing Chief Justice and will assume the highest judicial office in the country.
Justice Gavai is the son of the late Ramkrishna Suryabhan Gavai, a prominent figure in the Ambedkarite movement. His father had a distinguished political career, having served as a Member of Parliament from Amravati and later as the Governor of Bihar, Sikkim, and Kerala.
With this appointment, Justice Gavai becomes one of the few Chief Justices from a Scheduled Caste background, marking a significant moment in the history of India’s judiciary. His elevation is being viewed as both a professional milestone and a symbolic step toward greater representation in the country’s top institutions.
Justice Gavai’s swearing-in ceremony will be held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where he will be administered the oath of office by the President of India.
