Passengers at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) have received significant relief. The extension of platform number 6 will be completed by March 2026, allowing 15-coach local trains to operate from there. Currently, these trains run from platform 7, providing 22 services daily. After the extension, the number of services will double, reducing congestion.

The railway has demolished a 40-year-old dilapidated building at the Kurla end of platform 7 and relocated it towards platform 18. This has cleared the way for station expansion. According to officials, initially, two new 15-coach racks will be introduced. Each rack makes 10 to 12 trips daily, making a total of 40 to 44 trips possible. This will benefit passengers on the CSMT-Kurla and CSMT-Thane corridors.

Meanwhile, there is only one pit line at the Kurla car shed, where maintenance of a 15-coach train is carried out. With the increase in racks, the pressure will increase, so an additional pit line extension is necessary before March. All these works will be completed in phases, so that there is no disruption in operations.

The station expansion will increase capacity without increasing services. The extension of platform 1 will add 66 coaches to 22 trains of 15-12 coaches. Out of the 34 station expansions, 24 have been completed. Once completed, CSMT's capacity will increase significantly, providing passengers with fast, easy travel facilities.

  • Platform 6 at CSMT will be expanded by March 2026.

  • After the expansion, the number of 15-coach local train services will double.

  • Great benefit for passengers on the CSMT-Kurla and CSMT-Thane routes.

  • Significant increase in total passenger capacity without increasing services due to station expansion.
