A mild tremor was felt in the Koyna Dam area of Patan Taluka in Satara district. The earthquake occurred around 1:45 PM on Friday. Its intensity was recorded at 2.9 on the Richter scale. Since this earthquake was mild, tremors were not felt in most areas.
The epicenter of the earthquake was approximately 41 kilometers from the Koyna Dam, 10 kilometers east of Tanmala village in the Warna Valley, and 11 kilometers south of Chiplun. The depth of the earthquake was recorded at 41 kilometers. Therefore, officials have informed that there is no threat to the dam.
The Koyna Dam area is considered an earthquake-prone zone. Small and large tremors are felt in this region from time to time. At the beginning of the new year, on January 5, an earthquake of 2.4 Richter magnitude was also recorded. Special equipment is being installed on the Koyna project to study these ongoing movements.
The system installed at the bottom, middle, and top of the dam will allow for a detailed study of ground movements. Experts believe that this study will help strengthen the safety of the dam.
