The onset of pre-monsoon showers has brought significant weather changes across Maharashtra, with heavy rainfall lashing several regions. While the intense heat continues to trouble citizens, pre-monsoon rains have begun making their presence felt—particularly in Mumbai, which witnessed a heavy downpour yesterday.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, and the Konkan region, predicting heavy rainfall over the next five days, up to May 25. The IMD has also warned of rough sea conditions in the Arabian Sea, prompting authorities to issue strict advisories to fishermen.
According to the IMD, a low-pressure area is expected to develop in the Arabian Sea near the Maharashtra-Goa coast from May 21, which may intensify and move northwards by May 24. While the system currently poses no direct threat to the Maharashtra coastline, the sea is likely to become turbulent, especially near Raigad, Ratnagiri, Mumbai, and Palghar between May 22 and 24.
The Chief Minister’s Office reiterated the warning through an official tweet, urging fishermen to remain cautious. The Disaster Management Department has also advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the deep sea during this period, particularly due to strong winds forecast in offshore regions.
Regularly monitor updates from the India Meteorological Department.
Strictly follow instructions from the local administration and fishing cooperatives.
Avoid deep-sea fishing entirely during this period.
Refrain from using small boats and remain close to the shore.
Always carry safety equipment, including life jackets and wireless communication devices.
Secure all boats and vessels onshore in safe areas to protect them from high waves and wind gusts.
Most importantly, do not venture out when the sea is rough—ensure the safety of yourself and others.
