The long-cherished dream of Thane residents to have their own metro service is about to become a reality. By December this year, the first phase of the Thane Metro is expected to be operational, connecting key parts of the city with Mumbai via Metro Line 4 (Wadala to Kasarvadavali) and Metro Line 4A (Kasarvadavali to Gaimukh).
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is overseeing the project, which aims to significantly improve transportation across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The metro service is designed to provide a faster, more comfortable, and convenient travel option for daily commuters. Metro Line 4 spans a total of 32.32 kilometers, while Line 4A adds an additional 2.7 kilometers, covering a combined total of 32 stations. The entire stretch has been divided into three construction phases, with approximately 80% of the work already completed.
According to MMRDA officials, the first phase — from Kasarvadavali to Cadbury Junction — is scheduled to be completed by December 2025. The second phase, from Cadbury Junction to Gandhinagar, is expected to be ready by 2026. However, before the end of this year, Thane residents will begin to see partial metro operations under a soft launch phase, marking the city's official entry into the metro network.
Trial runs are currently underway on the Gaimukh to Cadbury Junction route, as authorities test the metro trains and infrastructure for safety and operational efficiency. The train will run through key stations including Gaimukh, Govindipada, Kasarvadavali, Vijay Garden, Dongripada, Tikujiniwadi, Manpada, Kapurbawdi, Majivda, and Cadbury Junction.
Officials from MMRDA have expressed confidence that the Thane Metro will significantly reduce travel time, ease traffic congestion, and offer a sustainable transportation option for thousands of daily commuters. With the project nearing completion and trial runs in progress, Thane is on track to join Mumbai’s growing metro network by the end of 2025.
