The pre-monsoon spell has begun with a strong presence across Maharashtra, bringing heavy rains, thunderstorms, and gusty winds to several regions. The soaring temperatures over the past few days have left citizens reeling under intense heat, only to be met now with sudden and severe rainfall.
On Tuesday, Mumbai witnessed a heavy downpour accompanied by lightning, leading to significant waterlogging in many low-lying areas. The rain caused disruptions in daily life, with traffic jams and public transport delays inconveniencing residents across the city and its suburbs.
The pre-monsoon showers have not been limited to Mumbai alone. Various parts of the state, particularly in the Konkan region, experienced intense rainfall. This sudden weather change has raised concerns about agricultural damage, with reports of crop loss emerging from several districts.
A low-pressure system has developed in the Arabian Sea and is currently advancing from the Karnataka coast toward the Konkan region. This system is expected to intensify rainfall activity over the coming days.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts for multiple districts across the state. The alerts are in place from today and are expected to last till May 25.
Yellow Alert: Issued for Konkan, including Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Palghar, where heavy rains are forecasted. Thunderstorms and lightning are likely to accompany the rains.
Orange Alert: A more severe warning has been declared for districts expected to receive very heavy rainfall and possible strong wind gusts.
