The region of Marathwada continues to reel under the impact of relentless rains, causing widespread damage to agriculture, livestock, and human life. Over the past few days, intense showers accompanied by lightning have led to tragic incidents and large-scale disruption, leaving both farmers and citizens in distress.
In a heart-wrenching incident in Varwat village of Nanded district, a stream overflowed following a cloudburst-like downpour, sweeping away a mother and her two daughters. Rescue operations are underway, and authorities have confirmed the loss of several livestock across the region.
As per a report from the Divisional Commissioner’s Office, Dharashiv district recorded the highest rainfall on Tuesday at 230.9 mm, followed by Latur with 206.5 mm. Heavy rainfall was recorded in 19 out of 42 revenue mandals in Dharashiv alone, inundating agricultural fields and rural settlements.
In Beed district, six revenue boards were severely affected by the downpour on Monday night. Thousands of hectares of farmland have been submerged, and fruit orchards have also suffered significant damage. Due to the unseasonal nature of the rainfall, tillage operations have been delayed, adding to the woes of farmers preparing for the Kharif season.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rain with thunderstorms is expected in isolated parts of Marathwada over the next two days. Between May 29 and 31, light to moderate rainfall is likely across the region.
Farmers have been advised to closely monitor weather updates and plan farming activities accordingly. The agriculture department has appealed to farmers to prepare for cultivation only after the weather stabilizes, to minimize further losses.
