After the election of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the second special meeting is being held today, where the official announcement of the Leader of the Opposition and the Leader of the House will be made. Also, the names of the members of the four statutory committees - standing, education, reform, and BEST - will be announced.
Since BJP has emerged as the party winning the most seats in the BMC elections, the party's group leader Ganesh Khankar will be declared as the leader of the house. Meanwhile, since Shiv Sena (Thackeray group) is the second largest opposition party, group leader Kishori Pednekar will be recognized as the opposition leader. Mayor Ritu Tawde will make this announcement based on the letters received from both parties.
After this special meeting, once the appointment of committee members is done, the election for the standing and education committee chairmanship will be held on February 20. For this, the process of submitting nomination papers to the municipal secretary will begin on February 18. These announcements are likely to give a new turn to the political equations of the BMC, and the possibility of increased tension between the ruling party and the opposition cannot be ruled out.
