A major change is going to happen on the Western Railway in Mumbai. Local train services between Goregaon and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) will be completely shut down for about three months. This is due to the block required for the construction of the fifth and sixth lines. This work particularly includes the demolition and reconstruction of the Bandra-Khar flyover, which is the most complex part of this project.
This work is being carried out as part of the Western Railway's Mumbai Central-Borivali sixth route project. The cost of this project is 964.84 crore rupees and currently, the physical progress is 70 percent. The target is to complete the project by December 2027. As a result, passengers will have to endure significant inconvenience for the next three months. The railway administration has started planning, and implementation will begin soon.
Several redevelopment projects have been underway on the Western Railway for the past few months. The work on the fifth and sixth tracks between Kandivali and Borivali continued throughout December-January. As a result, 200 to 250 local trains were canceled daily, causing significant inconvenience to passengers. However, once the work was completed, services returned to normal. Now, work on the fifth and sixth tracks is underway on the Harbor Line between Mumbai Central and Borivali. Due to space constraints, there is a plan to demolish and rebuild the Bandra-Khar bridge.
The work on the fifth and sixth tracks between Bandra and Borivali has been completed. However, it is still pending between Mahim and Santacruz stations. Therefore, the local service will remain limited from CSMT to Bandra, providing some relief to passengers. Initially, there was a plan to take a six-month block on the Goregaon-CSMT route, but it has been limited to three months to reduce inconvenience.
This project will reduce the strain on local tracks, improve the schedule, and allow more local trains to operate. Once all tracks are completed, mail-express trains can be diverted, and four main tracks will be available for locals. The work on the new tracks across the entire Western Railway will be completed by December 2027.
