After a long time, Mumbaikars will once again have access to the monorail service. The corridor of the monorail, which was shut down for safety reasons since September 2025, will be ready for passengers from May. Before the 19.54-kilometer corridor from Chembur to Wadala and Jacob Circle is reopened, extensive safety testing of new trains, signaling, and telecom systems is currently in its final stage. This service will be available to passengers only after the completion of an independent safety audit.
A new contractor for the operation and maintenance of the monorail will be appointed soon. Power Mech Projects has submitted the lowest bid of 296 crore rupees, and it is likely that this company will receive the contract for the next five years. This decision will provide great relief to commuters in eastern Mumbai and make daily travel more convenient.
Frequent technical and engineering issues were responsible for the monorail shutdown. Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMOCL) is overseeing the process and has instructed the new rolling stock supplier to complete the remaining work swiftly. MMRDA started safety inspections under ISA last week, and this process will continue for a few more days.
The necessary certificate to start the monorail will be issued after all safety criteria are met. Additionally, an independent inspection by the CMRS (Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety) will also take place, and a proposal to appoint a retired officer as an Independent Engineer has been sent to the state government. Once approved, this inspection will commence immediately. This development will rejuvenate Mumbai's public transport system and provide an alternative route for passengers during peak hours.
