In an effort to tackle increasing traffic congestion at Pune Airport, authorities have announced plans to introduce a time-bound pick-up and drop-off system for private vehicles. The move aims to address the persistent issue of overcrowding caused by vehicles idling for extended periods near the arrival and departure terminals.

According to Pune Airport Management officials, the new system will monitor entry and exit times for private vehicles. Those exceeding the stipulated time limit will be subject to penalties. While the exact time limit and fine amount are yet to be finalized, officials confirmed that automated tracking mechanisms will be in place to enforce the rule.

“Vehicles will be timed upon entry and exit. Those that exceed the permitted duration will be fined,” an official said, noting that similar systems are already operational at several other airports across India.

Despite the deployment of four to five traffic wardens, managing the chaotic vehicular flow remains a challenge. “Every day, at least ten drivers are fined up to ₹500,” said a local businessman near the airport. “Some drivers misuse the pick-up and drop-off zones by parking under false pretenses, often refusing to vacate even when warned.”

Currently, only cabs are allowed to drop off passengers, while private vehicles can both drop off and pick up. The upcoming system is designed to discourage long-term parking and enforce discipline in the high-traffic zones outside the terminals. Wardens have been instructed to prioritize fining during peak hours to manage congestion more effectively.

Historically, time-based penalties have been implemented at the airport. In 2019, a ₹340 fine was imposed on vehicles waiting longer than three minutes. Prior to that, in 2016, vehicles were allowed a seven-minute grace period, beyond which an ₹85 fine was levied.

The proposed system has received a positive response from both frequent travelers and local residents, who have long called for better traffic management in the area. Many believe that once implemented, the initiative will significantly improve the passenger experience by ensuring smoother traffic flow and reducing unnecessary delays.
