In a unique initiative to preserve and enhance urban greenery, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) launched its ‘Tree Ambulance’ service on World Environment Day today. The project aims to ensure proper maintenance, health care, and protection of trees across the city.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Parks Department of PMC, is part of a broader effort to expand Pune’s green belt and address challenges related to tree conservation. The specialized ambulance is designed to treat pest-infested trees, conduct tree surgery, and carry out replanting and plantation activities.

The ‘Tree Ambulance’ is outfitted with a variety of advanced tools and equipment, including a hydraulic chainsaw, electric chainsaw, spray machine, battery-operated bar cutter, welding cable, and woodcutting apron. It will be operated by a team of trained professionals, including arborists and pest control experts.

According to PMC officials, one of the key goals of the service is to treat trees that have been damaged by human activity, such as the placement of banners, posters, and nails — which can significantly weaken or injure the trees.

The initiative has received praise from environmentalists and nature-conscious citizens who see it as a positive step toward urban ecological care. However, several voices within the community have also urged the PMC to go further — by addressing issues like indiscriminate tree cutting, lack of proper replanting, and tree felling without proper permits. Some citizens have demanded comprehensive surveys before any tree-cutting is approved, and stricter enforcement to prevent unauthorized deforestation within city limits.

While the Tree Ambulance represents a proactive approach to urban environmental stewardship, activists say its success will depend on consistent implementation and broader policy reforms. As Pune continues to expand, maintaining its balance between development and ecology remains a pressing challenge.
