Travel from Thane to South Mumbai will soon become much easier and faster for regular commuters. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has officially started construction of the much-anticipated Elevated Eastern Freeway extension project. This project is set to be a game-changer for millions of people who travel daily between Thane and Mumbai.

According to information provided by MMRDA, this corridor, approximately 13.9 kilometers long, will be fully elevated and developed as a six-lane high-speed link. Once the project is completed, travel time between Thane and South Mumbai will be reduced to 25 to 30 minutes, compared to the current travel time of over an hour due to heavy traffic on the Eastern Express Highway. This new freeway is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion.

This freeway will start from JVLR, Anand Nagar in Thane and extend up to Chedda Nagar (Ghatkopar). It will connect major junctions such as Mulund, Airoli, Vikhroli, Kanjurmarg, Mankhurd, and Ghatkopar. This route, seamlessly connected to the Anand Nagar Saket Elevated Road, will make travel continuous and smooth. In addition, connectivity to the Samruddhi Expressway will increase, making long-distance travel faster and more convenient.

According to officials, once the project is completed, traffic congestion on the Mumbai-Thane route will be significantly reduced. The high-speed freeway will not only cut down travel time but also reduce vehicle emissions. Preliminary preparations for the project, such as surveys, test piles, and geotechnical inspections, have been completed, and pier casting work has also begun. For the first time in Mumbai, construction is being carried out using a single pile-single pier system, which mainly includes 2.5-meter diameter monopiles, strong pier structures, a 40-meter span, and a 25-meter single segment superstructure.

Up-and-down ramps will be constructed at Mulund Check Naka, Airoli, and Vikhroli junctions for access to and from the freeway. A three-lane toll plaza will also be set up in both directions near the Navapada flyover.

This project will not be limited to just reducing travel time but will also strengthen the Thane-Mumbai economic corridor and ensure a more organized traffic system. Importantly, this development comes at a time when major improvements are being made to the road and metro network in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Once the project is completed, it will not be confined to Thane and Mumbai alone but will accelerate the development of the entire region.
