A heated controversy has erupted at the revered Vitthal-Rukmini Temple in Alandi, Pune, after Yogi Shri Niranjan Nath, a trustee of the Alandi Devasthan Trust, was accused of misbehaving with Warkaris, journalists, and police personnel. The incident reportedly occurred within the temple premises during preparations for the palanquin (palkhi) ceremony of the saints, a major spiritual tradition.
According to sources, Niranjan Nath allegedly used abusive language while speaking to several Warkaris (devotees), members of the media, and even police officers present at the site. The situation unfolded amidst a large crowd gathered for the traditional rituals ahead of the saint palanquin procession, a cornerstone event of the Ashadhi Wari pilgrimage.
Eyewitnesses claim that the trustee's behavior was not only disrespectful but also disruptive, especially considering the sanctity and scale of the occasion. Several videos capturing portions of the altercation have since gone viral on social media, further inflaming public sentiment.
The incident has stirred deep resentment within the Warkari community. Devotees and Warkari mandals have voiced strong criticism online, with calls for the temple administration to take strict action against the trustee.
A senior Warkari, reacting to the incident, stated:
"If the servants of God start considering themselves as masters, then it is not service, but ego."
This quote, widely shared on social platforms, reflects the community’s disappointment with what they see as arrogance unbecoming of a temple trustee.
As of now, the Alandi Devasthan Trust has not issued an official statement regarding the incident. However, the controversy has led to an atmosphere of tension in the temple town, with many fearing it may affect the upcoming palanquin ceremonies.
